Police have registered a murder case against Yashkumarsinh, the nephew of Congress MP Shaktisinh Gohil, after concluding that the fatal shooting of his wife Rajeshwari was not accidental and that he later died by suicide.
The incident occurred at the couple’s residence in an NRI Tower on Judges Bungalows Road in the Vastrapur area. The couple, married just two months ago, were both found dead on the night of January 21. Police had initially registered an accidental death case, but the probe was reclassified following forensic post-mortem findings and preliminary investigation.
DCP (Zone 1) Harshad Patel said accidental firing from the licensed revolver recovered from the scene appeared “highly unlikely”. “There were only two bullets in the revolver and both were fired. The first bullet struck Rajeshwari in the head. After that, Yashkumarsinh is believed to have shot himself,” he said, adding that the motive is still being investigated.
Based on the findings, a case has been registered at Vastrapur police station under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (murder) and Section 30 of the Arms Act. The FIR was lodged by ACP (City A Division) Jayesh Brahmbhatt.
Police said the couple had gone to a relative’s house for dinner earlier that evening and later stepped out near their residence to have juice before returning home. CCTV footage from these locations is being collected, and call detail records are being examined. Statements are being recorded; so far, Yashkumarsinh’s mother has been questioned.
According to the FIR, after Rajeshwari was shot, Yashkumarsinh called emergency services. The 108 ambulance staff declared Rajeshwari dead on arrival, following which Yashkumarsinh allegedly shot himself with the same licensed revolver.
The forensic post-mortem reports state that the cause of death in both cases was shock and haemorrhage due to head injuries caused by firearm discharge.
Police noted that a revolver cannot discharge without deliberate pressure on the trigger, reinforcing the conclusion that the shooting was intentional. Further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events and the motive.
