Casemiro to leave Man United at end of the season

Casemiro will leave Manchester United when his contract expires at the end of the season, the club have confirmed.

The Brazilian midfielder, who arrived from Real Madrid in 2022, will depart on a free transfer after United decided against triggering a one-year option in his contract.

The 33-year-old has made 146 appearances following his £60 million ($81m) move from the Bernabeu, scoring 21 goals.

“I will carry Manchester United with me throughout my entire life,” said Casemiro.

“From the first day that I walked out at this beautiful stadium, I felt the passion of Old Trafford and the love that I now share with our supporters for this special club.

“It is not time to say goodbye; there are many more memories to create during the next four months.

“We still have a lot to fight for together; my complete focus will, as always, remain on giving my everything to help our club to succeed.”

Sources have told ESPN that it was Casemiro’s decision to announce his departure four months early to give “clarity” about his situation.

He’s keen to continue playing in one of Europe’s top five leagues next season, while he has also been the subject of interest from Saudi Arabia in the past.

Sources close to United have told ESPN that the exit of one of the club’s highest earners will allow for “additional capacity” to bolster the squad in the summer.

Midfield is a priority area ahead of the summer window with Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba among the list of targets.
