CAROLS IN THE DOMAIN to honour victims after Bondi Beach tragedy

Sydney’s iconic Carols in the Domain will take on added significance this year, with a dedicated moment of remembrance planned following last Sunday’s tragic Bondi Beach attack.

The Salvation Army’s Carols in the Domain returns this Saturday night, broadcast live at 8.00pm on Seven and streaming on 7plus, again hosted by Sunrise presenters Natalie Barr and Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington.

While traditionally a celebration of Christmas and community, this year’s event will gently acknowledge the impact of the Bondi Beach tragedy, with the candle lighting ceremony incorporating a special moment of reflection.

Several performances across the night will also be dedicated to those lost in the Bondi Beach attack, as well as the many people and families affected by the tragedy.

Barr said this year’s Carols in the Domain carries added weight, describing the broadcast as a moment for the country to pause, reflect and come together after a deeply challenging week.

“It’s a chance for us to pause, to honour those we’ve lost, and to stand together as a community.”

Shirvington described the event as a symbol of resilience, saying music and tradition remain central to how Sydney responds in difficult times.

“This year it’s a powerful symbol of resilience… even in tough times, we can create moments of hope and connection.”

Executive Producer Michael McKay said the night would carefully balance reflection with the warmth and familiarity families expect from Carols in the Domain.

“Carols will gently acknowledge last Sunday’s tragic events… while families, and especially young children, can feel comforted by the familiarity, warmth and togetherness that Christmas brings.”

Joining Barr and Shirvington is a wide ranging lineup of performers, including children’s favourites The Wiggles, ARIA Award winner and The Voice coach Kate Miller-Heidke, international pop icon Leo Sayer and Australian music legend Marcia Hines.

The night will also feature performances from Budjerah, Hugh Sheridan, Erin Holland, James Johnston, Mark Vincent, Patrick Roberts, the cast of Back to the Future: The Musical, the Australian Girls Choir, Sydney Youth Orchestra, the Salvation Army Choir and more, under the musical direction of Chong Lim AM.

The broadcast also marks a milestone for the long-running event, with The Salvation Army becoming the official naming partner for the first time in the concert’s 43 year history.

Adding to the broader Carols celebration, New Idea joins the event as official print partner, releasing a special issue with a 16 page souvenir guide, carols songbook and interviews with Barr and Shirvington.

The Salvation Army’s Carols in the Domain airs live Saturday 20 December at 8.00pm on Seven and 7plus.
