Bulldogs captain Stephen Crichton breaks St George Illawarra hearts with seconds left in golden-point thriller

Canterbury captain Stephen Crichton has stood up to defeat the Dragons with just seconds remaining in a golden-point thriller to cap off the NRL’s latest Las Vegas opener.

An ailing Valentine Holmes missed two deep field goals for St George Illawarra, with Daniel Atkinson also missing the mark once, while Matt Burton couldn’t convert for the Bulldogs.

But after a penalty on halfway sent the Dogs down the field with a minute left, it was Crichton who nailed his chance from 35m out as the clock ticked down to zero.

The two sides went try for try across the night before a Kyle Flanagan penalty goal in the 74th minute teed up golden point.

Bulldogs five-eighth Matt Burton sung Crichton’s praises immediately after the match.

“It would’ve been devastating to lose like that but skip steps up and does it again. That’s why he’s here,” Burton told Fox.
