Newsweek and Statista partnered to share the world’s top hospitals for 2026 last week, with 14 Massachusetts hospitals making the list.
The organization evaluated more than 2,500 hospitals, with special recognition given to the top 250 institutions worldwide.
Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston ranked fifth, only behind the Mayo Clinic-Rochester hospital in Minnesota, Toronto General Hospital-University Health Network in Toronto, the Cleveland Clinic, and Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset in Stockholm.
Brigham and Women’s Hospital ranked 18th overall, with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center coming in at No. 112 and Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital at No. 250.
“With so many options to consider, it can be challenging for patients and families to gather a comprehensive view of their options,” Newsweek wrote. The ranking is to “help bridge that gap.”
The list ranked the best hospitals in 32 countries, selected based on comparability factors such as standard of living, life expectancy, population size, number of hospitals, and data availability.
The ranking used several data sources. The first was publicly available quality metrics, which differed between countries.
Newsweek and Statista also invited tens of thousands of medical experts, including doctors, hospital managers, and other health care professionals, from the 32 countries to participate in an online survey.
The ranking also used results from patient experience surveys from public data.
Lastly, the organizations surveyed hospitals on the implementation status of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures. PROMS are standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to assess their perceptions of functional well-being and quality of life.
A board of medical experts supported the development of the methodology.
Here is a list of the other 10 hospitals in the state that also made the list:
- Brown University Health-Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River
- Tufts Medical Center in Boston
- UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester
- Newtown-Wellesley Hospital in Newtown
