Apollo Perelini has announced his retirement as head coach and CEO of UAE Rugby, bringing an important era of leadership to a close. His departure opens a new chapter for the national programme, which has grown steadily during his time in charge.
Perelini arrived with strong coaching experience and introduced clearer structures across senior and age group teams. His work focused on improving standards, building pathways, and giving the national side a more consistent identity.
Reflecting on his time in the role, Perelini said:
“I wanted to take UAE Rugby as high as it could go. When I started, the team was ranked 105 in the world. We are now ranked 40. It has been a very good journey.”
Under his watch, the senior men and women’s’ team produced several competitive campaigns in Asia Rugby tournaments. Youth development also improved, with more players progressing from schools and clubs into national training environments. Coaches who worked alongside him often highlight his ability to lift preparation and expectations across the programme.
Rugby clubs around the region have acknowledged the stability he brought to the system. Many believe the national setup is stronger and more organised today than when he first arrived.
The next head coach will inherit a growing domestic rugby scene, increasing school participation, and a national team that has made steady progress. Keeping top players engaged and strengthening the pathway for UAE born athletes will be key priorities.
UAE Rugby is expected to share its transition plan in the coming weeks. Perelini leaves with respect from across the community and with a record that helped move the national team forward.
