Fortnite is now available again on Google Play worldwide, marking its return to the platform after more than five years of legal disputes between Epic Games and major app store operators.
The battle royale title is once again offered as a free download and arrives alongside the launch of its latest season, Fortnite Showdown.
Background of Removal
Fortnite was removed from both Google Play and Apple’s App Store in August 2020. The removal followed Epic Games’ attempt to introduce its own external payment system for in-game purchases, bypassing platform fees.
This move led to legal action from Epic against both Google and Apple.
Legal Outcome and Platform Changes
Epic Games ultimately prevailed in its legal challenges, leading to changes in how both platforms handle payments.
As a result, Google Play and the App Store now allow developers to use alternative payment systems. These systems come with lower commission fees and remove certain restrictions previously placed on developers and users.
Return Timeline
Fortnite first returned to the US version of Google Play in December. It was also relisted on the Apple App Store in May.
With its global return to Google Play now complete, the game is once again accessible to users worldwide through the official app marketplace.
