AFP launches internal inquiry into Bondi failings led by former Deputy Commissioner Neil Gaughan

A former high-ranking Australian Federal Police officer will lead an internal review of the organisation’s possible failures in the lead up to last month’s Bondi massacre, and how it responded after the deadly events.

The Nightly can reveal AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett has appointed former Deputy Commissioner Neil Gaughan to undertake the examination which will look at how the AFP worked with the New South Wales Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT).

Several other changes have also been recently made inside the AFP, including Assistant Commissioner Hilda Sirec being appointed the acting Deputy Commissioner of National Security, replacing Assistant Commissioner Nigel Ryan earlier this month.

Assistant Commissioner Peter Crozier has also been asked to lead the AFP’s involvement into the review of security agencies being conducted by former Defence Secretary Dennis Richardson, which is due to be completed by April.

A national security community source has told The Nightly that a similar internal review announced by intelligence agency ASIO shortly after the deadly attacks is now almost compete.

Sources have previously said they expect the Richardson review to focus on a Department of Home Affairs database known as the “Movement Alert List” which contains over a million names of people of interest to national security authorities.

The Australian Federal Police has been approached for comment about the internal review being conducted by Mr Gaughan, who AFP figures have described as a “thorough insider”.
