Adelaide weather forecast for Wednesday December 31 and the days ahead

Adelaide is heading into a hot and mostly sunny start to the new year, with rising daytime temperatures, warm nights and minimal rainfall expected through the first week of January.

New Years Eve is shaping up to be bright and breezy, with mostly sunny skies and a top of 25 degrees. Southeasterly winds will blow at 25 to 35 kilometres per hour, keeping conditions feeling slightly cooler than the temperature suggests. Rain is unlikely, with just a five per cent chance forecast. Sun protection is essential, with the UV Index predicted to reach an extreme level of 12 between 9am and 5:30pm.

New Year’s Day will bring a noticeable jump in heat. Thursday is forecast to be sunny with a cool overnight minimum of 12 degrees before climbing to a warm top of 30. Southeasterly winds will continue at 20 to 30 kilometres per hour, and there is no rain expected throughout the day. UV levels will again sit at extreme levels.

Friday continues the summer pattern, starting at 15 degrees and reaching a hot 32 under clear skies. Winds will shift throughout the day, beginning east to southeasterly before tending west to southwesterly during the afternoon, then turning southerly again in the evening.

Conditions ease slightly over the weekend. Saturday is expected to reach 31 degrees with sunshine dominating, and Sunday is much the same with a with a top of 29 degrees and mostly sunny skies. Nights will remain mild, with overnight lows sitting in the mid-teens.

The heat is expected to build again early next week. Monday is forecast to reach 31 degrees under sunny conditions, before temperatures spike on Tuesday, which is shaping up to be the hottest day of the week with a top of 36 degrees and clear skies.

Across South Australia, a trough lingering in the far north and a ridge of high pressure to the south will keep conditions largely dry for most regions. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms may develop in the far north through to Saturday, but rainfall is expected to remain low.

There are strong wind warning today in the Upper West Coast, Lower West Coast, Spencer Gulf, Gulf St Vincent, Upper South East Coast and Lower South East Coast. The wind warning on Thursday flows through the Upper South East Coast and Lower South East Coast.

Sheep graziers in the Mount Lofty Ranges are warned that cold temperatures and southeasterly winds are expected today.
