Merry Christmas! Adelaide is about to swing hard into classic summer mode, with a stretch of sunny days and climbing temperatures set to dominate the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
After a cooler start to the festive period, conditions will steadily heat up across the city, peaking early next week with temperatures pushing close to 40 degrees, before easing again just in time for New Year’s Eve celebrations.
For Christmas Day today, we can expect cloud clearing and a top of 24 degrees. Southeasterly winds will strengthen through the afternoon, and while rain isn’t on the cards, UV levels are extreme, with sun protection recommended from mid-morning through to early evening. Fire danger is rated High for the Mount Lofty Ranges.
Boxing Day (Friday) brings a crisp start, with the mercury dipping to 11 degrees overnight before climbing to a sunny 28 degrees during the day. Winds will remain fresh from the southeast, but it’s shaping up to be a near-perfect day for outdoor plans, with zero chance of rain.
Saturday continues the warming trend, with a minimum of 15 degrees and a maximum of 32 degrees. Sunshine dominates again, paired with light to moderate east to southeasterly winds and no rainfall expected.
By Sunday, the heat really settles in. Adelaide can expect a sunny day with temperatures climbing to 36 degrees, making it one of the hottest days of the festive break so far. While conditions remain dry, it’s a day to plan ahead, particularly for anyone spending time outdoors.
The hottest day of the stretch arrives on Monday, with temperatures forecast to hit 38 degrees. With clear skies and summer sun overhead, it’s a reminder to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure during the hottest part of the day, and check in on vulnerable friends, family and pets.
Relief arrives midweek. Tuesday sees temperatures drop back to a more comfortable 29 degrees under partly cloudy skies, before Wednesday cools further to a mild 23 degrees, offering a far gentler lead-in to New Year’s Eve.
The broader weather pattern across South Australia remains settled, with a ridge of high pressure dominating much of the state. Dry conditions are expected statewide through the weekend, with a cold front passing south of the Bight on Sunday but bringing little change locally.
While most of the state enjoys calm conditions, warnings remain in place for marine and coastal areas, with strong winds forecast for parts of the Gulf St Vincent and surrounding coastal zones. Sheep graziers in the Mount Lofty Ranges are also advised to take precautions, with cold overnight temperatures and strong winds posing a risk to exposed livestock on Friday.
Adelaide’s festive forecast delivers exactly what summer lovers are hoping for: sunshine, heat, and plenty of dry days — with a welcome cooldown just in time to ring in the new year.
