Adelaide weather forecast for Sunday April 12 and the days ahead

Adelaide is heading into a cool and fairly settled stretch of autumn weather, with cloudy skies and the odd light shower today before calmer, brighter conditions gradually return through the week. The main thing to know is that temperatures will stay below average, with mornings turning crisp and a bit foggy in places.

Today, Sunday, looks grey across the city with a medium chance of light showers and a top of just 19 degrees. Southwesterly winds of 15 to 25 km/h will add to that cooler feel before easing later tonight. Into Monday, Adelaide should improve slightly, with partly cloudy skies, a low of 10 and a top of 20 degrees. There is still a slight chance of a shower, and morning fog could make for a slow start in some suburbs.

Tuesday follows a very similar pattern, with another partly cloudy day, temperatures again ranging from 10 to 20 degrees, and a small chance of a morning shower. Fog is also possible about the northern suburbs early in the day. By Wednesday, conditions look more settled, with mostly sunny skies, light winds and a slightly warmer top of 22 degrees after a chilly morning low of 11.

The second half of the week keeps that gentle autumn feel going. Thursday is expected to be partly cloudy with a slight chance of a shower and a top of 21 degrees, while light winds become west to southwesterly during the day. Friday brings much the same, with another partly cloudy day, a top of 21 and southerly winds picking up slightly through the afternoon. By Saturday, Adelaide is set for a quieter finish to the week, with mostly sunny skies, light winds and a forecast top of 22 degrees.

Across South Australia, the broader picture is being driven by a high pressure system stretching a ridge over the state. That means much of SA will stay dry and cooler than usual through the first half of the week, especially away from the southern coastline. Isolated light showers are expected around the southern agricultural area today and Monday, mostly along the coastal fringe, while the north stays dry and sunny. Patchy morning fog is also likely through agricultural districts on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

By Tuesday and Wednesday, showers contract mainly to southern coasts, with the Lower South East the most likely part of the state to see more consistent wet weather as fronts begin to brush the southeast later in the week. Rainfall totals are expected to stay modest in most places, with up to 2 mm through the southern agricultural area, increasing to 2 to 10 mm about the southern coasts and ranges and the northeastern Spencer Gulf region. Northern districts should see little to no rainfall, but cool daytime temperatures will continue.

For coastal conditions closer to Adelaide, metropolitan waters remain manageable after a breezy start today. Southwesterly winds of 15 to 20 knots and seas of 1.5 to 2 metres will ease by around midday. From Monday onward, winds are expected to become lighter, with calmer seas and mostly partly cloudy to sunny conditions through midweek.

There is a strong wind warning in place for Sunday 12 April along the Lower South East Coast. Flood impacts are also continuing in the state’s far north and northeast. BOM says elevated river levels are continuing along the Warburton River at Poothapootha Waterhole and elevated creek levels are continuing along lower Cooper Creek around Innamincka. Many roads and access tracks are impacted by flooding, and travellers are being urged to check conditions before setting out.
