Adelaide weather forecast for Friday April 3 and the days ahead

Adelaide is heading into a mostly settled stretch of autumn weather, with sunny skies and warm afternoons across much of the next seven days before showers return later in the week.

For Friday, the city is looking at a partly cloudy day with a top of 24 degrees and southeasterly winds between 20 and 30 km/h. It’s a fairly calm finish to the week, and while there’s only a very slim chance of rain, it will feel cooler than recent warmer spells, especially around the hills where Mount Barker is only forecast to reach 21 degrees. That clearer, drier pattern continues into Saturday, with mostly sunny skies and a mild start of 14 degrees before Adelaide warms to 27 degrees. Winds will stay around the southeast and east, helping keep conditions comfortable rather than hot.

Sunday brings the week’s notable shift. Adelaide should start with a mostly sunny morning, but cloud is expected to build through the day, bringing a medium chance of showers in the afternoon and evening. Temperatures are set to climb to 30 degrees, making it the warmest day of the weekend, though the chance of a shower or two later on could interrupt outdoor plans. Winds will begin from the east to northeast before turning north to northwesterly, then easing in the afternoon.

By Monday, that change moves through fairly quickly. There’s a slight chance of a morning shower, but the day is otherwise expected to turn mostly sunny with a top of 29 degrees. Light winds will shift west to northwesterly during the morning before swinging south to southwesterly in the afternoon, which should take the edge off the warmth later in the day.

Tuesday looks cooler and a little more subdued, with a forecast top of 23 degrees under partly cloudy skies. There’s a slight chance of a shower, but at this stage rainfall totals remain very light. It’s the coolest day in Adelaide’s seven-day outlook and likely the one that feels most noticeably autumnal. The warmer air returns on Wednesday, when temperatures bounce back to 29 degrees. Partly cloudy skies and a medium chance of showers are forecast, so while it won’t be a washout, conditions may turn a little unsettled again. That pattern continues into Thursday, with another partly cloudy day, a top of 28 degrees, and a stronger chance of showers developing as westerly winds move in.

Across South Australia, the broader picture is being shaped by a high pressure system extending a ridge over the state, before a weak front brushes coastal districts on Sunday night and Monday. For the rest of Friday, most of the state will stay dry, apart from possible isolated showers in the southern agricultural area and far southwest, with morning fog around agricultural districts. Temperatures are below average in the south but trend above average in the north. Saturday remains mostly dry, with just isolated showers about the southwest and cooler-than-average conditions in the southeast. By Sunday, high cloud and isolated showers spread across the west and later into the southern agricultural area, while the far north stays sunny and warm. Monday keeps showers mainly near southern and western coasts, with mostly sunny conditions persisting in the north. Rainfall totals through to the end of Monday are expected to stay low for most areas, generally less than 2mm, increasing to 2 to 10mm about southern coasts and the Nullarbor Plain.

There is also ongoing flood concern in the state’s inland river systems, with elevated river levels continuing along the Warburton River at Poothapootha Waterhole and elevated creek levels continuing along the lower Cooper Creek around Innamincka. Floodwaters moving down from Queensland are expected to keep river and creek levels raised over coming weeks, and many roads and access tracks are already impacted.
