Travelling can be an exciting experience, whether you’re going to a new destination or a place you’ve been over and over again. But for some passengers, the hustle, noise and bright lights of an airport can feel overwhelming.

So, in a thoughtful step towards more inclusive travel for all, Adelaide Airport has unveiled its brand new sensory room. The chilled out space is designed to be calming, and support travellers who may need a quiet moment before or after a flight.

The new room is located on the airport’s Level two, nestled between the Virgin Australia Lounge and Airport Pharmacy. It’s a small retreat from the busy terminal, where passengers are often rushing and roaming between flights.

Taylor Spinks, Adelaide Airport Customer Experience Manager, said the first look at the new sensory room marks an important milestone.

“Adelaide Airport continues to enhance the passenger experience and make travel through South Australia’s gateway more welcoming for everyone. As we head into the new year, it’s encouraging to see local infrastructure leading the way in accessibility, inclusion and thoughtful design,” Spinks said.

Stepping inside, passengers are met with adjustable soft lighting, comfortable seating, quiet nooks and calming visuals, alongside tactile elements intended to help soothe the senses and reduce sensory overload.

“The room may be particularly helpful for travellers with autism, anxiety, hidden disabilities, nervous flyers, families with young children, or anyone who simply needs a pause from the bustle of airport life.

“Importantly, it’s free to use and available to all passengers.”

The room is recommended for passengers who are feeling nervous or stressed about flying, who need a quiet space to rest before travelling or find noise, lights or crowds overwhelming. The space has been designed to offer a soothing, stress-free environment and even features a selection of fidget tools and calming images on different screens.

Travellers are also welcome to bring their own comfort items such as headphones, fidgets or blankets, to make the experience more enjoyable.

Access to the Sensory Room has been designed to be simple and flexible. Bookings can be made online in advance or on the day via a QR code located at the entrance to the room, allowing travellers to plan ahead or respond to their needs in the moment. This ease of access ensures the space can be used by a wide range of passengers without unnecessary barriers.
