State Police and MassDOT both responded to the scene, and the bridge joint was cut, officials say.

About a dozen vehicles were damaged Saturday while traveling on Interstate 91 near mile marker 9 in Western Massachusetts, officials say.

The damage occurred on a bridge carrying I-91 over the Connecticut River, where a bridge joint was found protruding above the roadway, a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation said.

MassDOT maintenance crews responded immediately after being notified and cut down the raised joint, the spokesperson said.

Massachusetts State Police assisted several disabled vehicles that had pulled into the breakdown lane, while MassDOT crews assessed the scene, a State Police spokesperson said.

MassDOT said it will work with a contractor to perform a long-term repair.
Drivers whose vehicles were damaged can file a claim with the state online. Under state law, claims related to roadway defects allow recovery only for personal injury — capped at $4,000 — and not for property damage, according to the website.
