The Wanderers had been on a three match winning streak prior to the loss against Adelaide and it took an unkind bounce off the post into Danika Matos and into the goal for the Reds to beat them.

Young gun Talia Younis continued her excellent run off form, this time showing a more defensive side to her game.

The 17-year-old winger was making herself known for her attacking exploits, having created 18 chances before the match, but against Adelaide she contributed four tackles, one block and won 75% ground duels.

Kiwi winger Kelli Brown scored Newcastle’s goal from the spot as they fell to their third straight loss against Melbourne Victory, bringing them further away from the top six and the possibility of finals football.

Sydney FC head up to Brisbane as they look to get off the bottom of the table, while the Roar can go as high as second with a win.

The Roar put a real fright through league leaders Melbourne City last time out, going 2-0 up inside 15 minutes before City stabilised at the back and turned it around to run out 5-2 winners.

Goalkeeper Chloe Lincoln was impressive in the loss, making six saves, continually closing down her angles well and leaving City to score four of their five goals from rebounds.

Philippines international left-back Angie Beard made her return to the Ninja A-League via the bench, Brisbane will be glad to have her experience when she’s ready to start as they look to cover for the departure of Leia Varley.

Sydney made a game of it against Canberra United with defender Madison Ayson equalising before half time, however they did concede a late goal, with defeat keeping them at the foot of the table.

Sydney will be without Kirsty Fenton for this clash, the centre-back was judged to be the last defender when she fouled Michelle Heyman and was subsequently sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity and will serve a one game ban.

Brisbane took the win 3-1 when these sides played each other in a midweek clash at the start of February. Hana Lowry scored Sydney’s lone goal, with Japanese star Momo Hayashi scoring two and Daisy Brown scoring one for Brisbane.

The loss for Perth brings them to eighth on the table and three points behind sixth placed Melbourne Victory.

Canberra had better fortune in their close match, taking a 2-1 victory over Sydney FC. Bethany Gordon opened the scoring and Mary-Stanić Floody scored the 86th minute winner to bring them back up to third on the table.

When these sides played back in Round 4 it was Canberra United who walked away with a 3-0 win thanks to goals from Gordon, Michelle Heyman and Emma Robers.

Wellington Phoenix briefly went to the top of the table when they beat Perth Glory on Friday, only for City’s win on Sunday to push them back down to second with a crucial game in hand.

American striker Makala Woods scored her third goal in four starts since joining the club in January on the stroke of half time to see off Perth 1-0.

Last year’s champions Central Coast risk missing finals football altogether, currently sitting outside the top six by one point.

Their title defence was dealt a heavy blow in the week before their bye, with top goalscorer Annalise Rasmussen departing for Serie A Femminile giants Juventus.

Round 15 result
Melbourne Victory:
2-1 win over Newcastle Jets (H)
Melbourne City:
5-2 win over Brisbane Roar (H)

The second Melbourne derby of the season sees sixth placed Melbourne Victory host ladder leaders Melbourne City.

Victory finally earned their first win of the year last week after six straight games without one, some good fortune from a corner saw the ball turned in for an own goal to open the scoring before some excellence from Holly Furphy sealed a 2-1 win over the Jets.

City had some real woes at the back to start their match against Brisbane, goalkeeper Malena Mieres making two uncharacteristic errors to hand Brisbane a two goal lead.

Normal service resumed though when Rebekah Stott scored City’s first goal, and Holly McNamara, Bryleeh Henry, Deven Jackson and Aideen Keane followed with goals of their own to make it a comfortable 5-2 win.

When these sides met before Christmas, City took out a hard fought 2-1 victory with an own goal from Claudia Bunge cancelled out by Victory’s Rhianna Pollicina before McNamara’s late winner.
