According to authorities, the 58-year-old is accused of entering a rideshare vehicle, physically assaulting the driver, and making criminal threats.

The alleged victim did not require any medical attention.

Court documents show the actor was arrested and charged on Monday, with bail set at $50,000.

He was released later that night about 11.30pm local time and is due to appear in court on February 2.

The arrest marks another legal issue for the Emmy winner.

In 2007, Sutherland was charged with drink driving in Los Angeles after failing a field sobriety test. He later pleaded no contest to a DUI charge and served time in jail.

He was also charged with assault in 2009 over an alleged head-butting incident involving fashion designer Jack McCollough at a New York event.

That case was later dropped after both parties released a joint statement and Sutherland issued an apology.

Police investigations into the alleged Hollywood altercation are continuing.
