Massive chandeliers drape from the ceiling, casting a warm glow over the wine barrel stands and cocktail bar, perfectly blending old-world charm with contemporary glamour. This is all part of the newly restored Prohibition Seppeltsfield Distillery, which has officially entered its preview opening phase.
The heritage distillery now operates as a working production facility and tasting room, bringing craft distillery production back to a site that first produced spirits in 1877. Set within the iconic Seppeltsfield Estate, the distillery is adding yet another reason to plan a Barossa day trip or weekend away.
“It’s been a year-long project to give this amazing space a beautiful bar,” Prohibition CEO, Adam Carpenter said. “The bar befits the history and the level of polish we wanted to bring to the space; we are thrilled with the design and the feel of the space it has become.”
Visitors will be able to sip from curated gin flights, enjoy Prohibition-era cocktails, and nibble at cheese and cracker platters. Of course tastings of Prohibition’s iconic spirits are on offer, including gins and liqueurs that have collectively won more than 250 awards worldwide.
The gin flavour profiles feature exotic combinations of traditional ingredients from across the globe and are distilled with locally sourced, native Australian botanicals.
The project was completed by Prohibition Liquor Company, which also has a city distillery on Gilbert Street, first opening its doors back in 2017. Their gin now extends into venues and bottle shops across Australia and around the world.
The reopening of the distillery completes a vibrant visitor experience at Seppeltsfield Estate, where wine, food, art, craft, and now distilling all sit side by side. Perhaps visit after a long lunch at FINO Restaurant, a wander through JamFactory Craft+Design, or a visit to Vasse Virgin Natural Olive Oil Skincare for some local products.
The opening also marks the completion of a major project delivered from Prohibition Liquor’s successful crowd-funded capital raise in early 2025, which attracted the support of more than 1,100 investors, many of them South Australians backing the future of a homegrown brand.
An official opening is planned later this year, and the venue is already taking bookings for weddings and private events. For now, locals and visitors alike can stroll into the historic South Australian Estate and be among the first to experience and celebrate the return of the distillery.
The Prohibition Seppeltsfield Distillery is located within the Seppeltsfield Estate, just over the creek from Vasse Virgin.
