Sydney underline premiership credentials with win over Macarthur

Sydney FC have underlined their premiership credentials with a a muscular 3-0 win over Macarthur at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

The powerful display would have been all the more pleasing for Sydney because of the identities of those who constructed it, with Piero Quispe, Victor Campuzano, and Pat Wood filling the scoresheet for the Sky Blues.

Quispe opened the scoring in the 31st minute when Wood teed up Rhyan Grant who in turn squared to the Peruvian to calmly score his first ever Isuzu UTE A-League goal.

Campuzano doubled the Sky Blues’ advantage within three minutes of the restart when he flicked Ben Garuccio’s quality free kick across Filip Kurto’s goal in to the bottom corner at the far post.

Wood’s was the pick of the goals however, with the homegrown prospect first worrying Damien Da Silva off the ball before blowing past Kristian Popovic with pace and finishing with aplomb in the 62nd minute.

Sydney’s powerful performance cuts the gap from them to Auckland FC at the top of the table to just two points, with the Sky Blues holding on to a game in hand.

Macarthur – who came into the game unbeaten in their last six – had the opportunity to skip Sydney into second on the table, but never found a foothold in the game.

They’ll look to bounce back away to Central Coast Mariners next Saturday evening, while Sydney host Wellington Phoenix next Sunday afternoon in their long awaited return to Allianz Stadium.
