Cricket Australia have ushered in the New Year with a clear statement of intent, officially naming a ‘spin-heavy’ 15-player provisional squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. With the tournament set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka starting this February, selectors have prioritized slow-bowling depth and versatility to combat the subcontinent’s expected turning tracks.
Mitchell Marsh to lead a new-look attack
Veteran all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will captain the side, continuing his leadership role in the shortest format. The squad features a fascinating blend of seasoned World Cup winners and fresh faces prepared for the heat of Asian conditions.
Perhaps the most significant tactical shift is the selection of four primary spin options. While Adam Zampa remains the undisputed leader of the slow-ball attack, he is joined by left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann and the young sensation Cooper Connolly. With all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Matthew Short also capable of turning the ball, Australia could potentially field up to five spin options in their starting XI.
Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Tim David included despite injury concerns
In a calculated gamble, Australian selectors have named Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Tim David in the 15-man squad despite significant fitness clouds hanging over the trio. Cummins remains the biggest concern as he continues to manage a lumbar stress injury in his back; he is scheduled for a pivotal medical scan later this month that will determine if he can physically withstand the tournament’s intensity.
Meanwhile, veteran seamer Hazlewood is racing against time to recover from a combination of hamstring and Achilles issues that sidelined him for the recent Ashes series. High-stakes finisher David rounds out the injury list after sustaining a grade two hamstring strain during the BBL on Boxing Day. Chief selector George Bailey remains optimistic, stating the group is “tracking well,” but with the ICC deadline for final changes set for January 31, the medical team will be working overtime to ensure these key pillars are ready for the opening clash against Ireland on February 11.

Mitchell Owen misses out
The announcement has not been without controversy. The most notable omission is Mitchell Owen, who was the breakout star of the 2025 season. Despite a record-breaking BBL campaign, Owen was ultimately squeezed out by the return of Cameron Green.
Furthermore, for the first time in over a decade, a T20 World Cup squad will not feature Mitchell Starc, following his retirement from the format late last year. In his place, the selectors have opted for the skill of Xavier Bartlett over a traditional left-arm replacement like Ben Dwarshuis.
