Members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene staged a protest in Kanakagiri town of Koppal district on Monday by dumping red gram in a heap on the road demanding a revised minimum support price and an incentive from the State government.
The agitating farmers criticised the State government for procuring red gram only at Minimum Support Price (MSP) fixed by the Centre, without providing any additional incentive.
Addressing a gathering, Kalyana Karnataka divisional president of the Raitha Sangha Pampanna Naik said that procuring red gram at ₹8,000 per quintal, as fixed by the Centre, is inadequate as it fails to cover even production cost.
He demanded that the MSP be fixed at ₹8,500 per quintal and that the State government provide an additional incentive of ₹4,000 per quintal to ensure remunerative prices for farmers.
Farmer leader Sharanappa Doddamani said that both the Central and State governments are neglecting farmers interests.
He criticised the delay in installing crest gates at the Tungabhadra dam and expressed concern over the lack of water for irrigating rabi crop. He said that the absence of water has forced many farmers into distress and they are migrating in search of work.
The protesters also demanded that the government waive crop loan, immediate release of water to agriculture fields and also construction of a permanent building for the Agriculture Department office which is currently functioning from a rented building in the taluk.
The protesters submitted a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah through the Tahsildar.
