It was an entertaining clash at Coopers Stadium, as two contrasting styles of play produced five goals and plenty of action.
Western Sydney dominated possession early, with Brandon Borrello and Alou Kuol both testing Adelaide United keeper Joshua Smits.
While Western Sydney couldn’t convert any of their chances, Adelaide hit them on the counter. Craig Goodwin’s long switch finding Yaya Dukuly, who could cut in from the right and cut it back for Luka Jovanović to blast in off the crossbar.
At the half time, break, Adelaide United led 1-0.
Western Sydney Wanderers continued to pepper the Adelaide defence with shots and eventually, they found a way through with Aydan Hammond’s shot taking a deflection off of Vinko Stanisic on the way into the net.
Adelaide United’s lead was restored when substitute Austin Ayoubi’s near post run was found by Craig Goodwin from the corner.
Less than a minute later, Western Sydney were awarded a penalty when Stanisic’s sliding challenge brought Angus Thurgate down. Brandon Borrello converted the penalty to bring the scores to 2-2
Entering stoppage time, again Adelaide hit back on the counter: This time local lad Johnny Yull took possession on the left wing, cut in onto his right boot and curled it in low beyond a diving Lawrence Thomas to regain the lead and take the three points.
