There are only a few days before Christmas, and Adelaide is in for a classic summer build-up over the coming week, with mild conditions giving way to rising temperatures and a run of sunny days as Christmas passes and we head toward the weekend.
Today, skies are clearing across the city, with temperatures topping out at a cool 23 degrees. A southerly breeze will keep conditions comfortable, particularly along the coast, while cloud continues to thin into the evening. Rain chances remain low, sitting at just 10 per cent, and temperatures are tracking below average for this time of year.
Christmas Eve will feel fresh, starting with an overnight low of 12 degrees before warming to a high of 25 degrees. Partly cloudy skies are expected, with the slight chance of early morning fog about the hills. Winds will pick up from the southwest during the day, bringing a cooling influence by the afternoon. Despite the milder temperatures, the UV Index is forecast to reach extreme levels.
Christmas Day arrives with similar conditions, making it a comfortable one for outdoor celebrations. It will see cloud clearing through the day, with temperatures ranging from 13 degrees to 25 degrees. Southeasterly winds may be gusty at times, but rain chances remain minimal, keeping conditions dry for festive lunches and backyard gatherings.
From Friday onwards, the summer conditions will be back in full swing. Boxing Day will be sunny and warmer, with a high of 30 degrees and light windy. The heat continues to build into Saturday, which is forecast to reach 33 degrees under clear skies.
Sunday turns things up another notch, with a hot and sunny day expected and temperatures climbing to 36 degrees. By Monday, Adelaide could be in for its hottest day of the period, with a maximum of 39 degrees and mostly sunny conditions. Overnight temperatures will also remain warm, offering little relief after sunset.
Across South Australia more broadly, a ridge of high pressure is dominating weather conditions this week, keeping rainfall limited and allowing temperatures to steadily rise. Coastal areas may continue to experience fresh sea breezes, while inland regions warm more rapidly.
Fire danger remains moderate for the Mount Lofty Ranges today, while strong wind warnings are in place for Spencer Gulf on Wednesday, prompting coastal and marine users to stay informed.
Happy Tuesday and Christmas Eve-eve!
