Huntingdale man charged after alleged Nazi symbol display outside Western Australia mosque

An 18-year-old man has been charged after allegedly wearing a Nazi symbol outside a mosque in Perth’s south-east.

Police allege officers were patrolling Mills Rd in Gosnells, in the vicinity of a mosque, around 8.20am on Tuesday as part of Operation Dalewood when they spotted the man wearing a black face covering and a necklace featuring the extremist symbol.

Operation Dalewood is a taskforce created in response to Sydney’s Bondi terror attack to set a zero-tolerance approach to antisemitism.

Police will also be increasing their presence in an overt and covert manner at places of worship, schools and community organisations as part of the operation.

The 18-year-old was arrested at the scene and taken to nearby Gosnells Police Station.

The Huntingdale man has been charged with one count of displaying a Nazi symbol in a public place and one count of failing to obey a police order.

He is due to face Armadale Magistrates Court on January 16.

WA Police said prosecuting people involved in racially motivated or extremist behaviour remains a key focus for the force.

“Police will continue to take firm action against any individual or group who seeks to incite hatred or division through public displays of extremist ideology,” a spokesperson said.

Authorities are urging anyone who witnesses similar behaviour, or who is the victim of a hate crime, to contact police immediately.
