YSR Congress Party’s Parvatipuram-Manyam district president Sathrucharla Parikshit Raju said that the privatisation of the 18 newly constructed medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh would adversly affect the students from Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, and tribal communities, as their parents would not be able to afford medical education if the colleges were handed over to private managements.

Mr. Raju along with former deputy chief minister Pamula Pushpa Srivani, former Parvatipuram MLA Alajangi Jogarao and other leaders, took part in a protest rally in Parvatipuram on Monday opposing the privatisation of medical colleges in the State.

Speaking at the rally, he said that the ‘one crore signature’ campaign launched by the YSRCP has received good response from the people as they understand the importance of government run medical colleges, which would have superspecialty hospitals in near future.

Ms. Srivani and Mr. Jogarao said that privatisation would reduce convener quota seats, while the payment seats under the B and C category would increase, making medical education more expensive for poor and middle-class families. Despite restrictions imposed by the police department, the party held massive agitations in Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts.
