Netflix Stealth-Dropped Sequel to Their Most Successful Movie

Roar Uthaug’s (The Wave) Troll is the most-watched non-English Netflix film of all time. Let me repeat that: all time. The creature feature boasts an impressive 103,000,000 unique views, beating out titles like Under Paris and Oscar-nominee Society of the Snow. It’s weird, though. I mean, as an Uthaug stan, I definitely watched Troll. And, better still, I liked it. Yet, I never see anyone talk about the movie. Part of that is no doubt the “consume and forget” model of Netflix’s media ecosystem, so it’s all the more surprising that Netflix sort of stealth dropped a sequel. Yes, Troll 2 is now available on Netflix, and unsurprisingly, it’s trending in the top 10 right now.

The first Troll was an eco-fable dolled up as a monster movie. There was plenty of destruction as an ancient giant troll, awakened in a Norwegian mountain, plowed through the countryside en route to Oslo, though the third act compels the audience to shift their alliance. The Troll wasn’t so bad after all, and while the titular beast is killed, it’s a tragic end, one that the protagonists bemoan. Oslo was Troll territory first, you silly humans!

Troll 2 is set thirty years after the first, and no one has learned their lesson. The government is still kidnapping and researching (torturing) trolls. This sets in motion another chain of events that sees scientists scramble to save humanity from the wrath (rightfully) directed toward them from the eponymous creatures. Several cast members return from the first, and Uthaug is back in the director’s chair for what is reportedly Norway’s largest production ever. It’s a hoot. A forgettable one, sure, and it doesn’t yield the same gusto The Wave did back in 2016, but Uthaug continues to prove he’s this generation’s Roland Emmerich. No one does scale and destruction quite like him.

Social Reactions

Fans have largely been enjoying Troll 2 so far, though some opinions are more mixed. Check out some choice audience reactions below:

troll 2 (2025, dir. roar uthaug)

not as good as the first one, but still enjoyable. admire its love for the showa & heisei eras of godzilla & the infusion of norwegian lore. i hope they keep making more of this so that toho & legendary aren’t the only avenues for kaiju action. pic.twitter.com/FS1TheGiGi

Troll 2 puts more focus on story/cast but these aren’t strong enough to make up for less action. The much promoted Troll v. Troll fight underwhelms and the cinematography is weaker. But I enjoyed the lore, winter setting, most vfx and ski resort scene in this step-down sequel. pic.twitter.com/rI2Vv8JtJR
