We knew early on that the 2026 awards season would be a tight race. And with the nominations here for the first major awards ceremony, the Golden Globes, that theory has proven true. This morning, films and actors in the running for some of the most coveted accolades of the year have been unveiled, but not without some surprises. Leading the charge in nominations is One Battle After Another, which scored a total nine nominations. And not far behind is Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, which received eight nominations, including for four of its actors: Stellan Skarsgård, Renate Reinsve, Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas.
But what about the films that missed out? Below, we’re bringing you the major snubs and surprises from the the 83rd Golden Globe Awards.
1. Snub: Wicked: For Good
Before you panic, the second installation of John M. Chu’s Wicked musical actually received more nominations than the first. Where it did fall short, however, was being recognised in the Best Motion Picture: Musical/Comedy category. This one was stacked, with titles like Bugonia, Marty Supreme, and One Battle After Another receiving nods.
2. Snub: Wake Up Dead Man
While the first two chapters of the Knives Out franchise fared quite well at the Golden Globes (the first earned three nominations, and the second got two), the newly-released Wake Up Dead Man has missed out entirely. That’s despite boasting a truly stacked cast, including Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, and of course, Daniel Craig.
3. Snub: Christy
There was hype around Sydney Sweeney’s boxing biopic from the moment we saw first-look photos of the actress in the ring. But despite an exciting lead up, the film not only failed to perform at the box office, but was also snubbed at the 2026 Golden Globes, including for Sweeney herself in the Lead Actress category.
4. Surprise: Jacob Elordi is this year’s most-nominated Australian
Well, is it actually that surprising? Elordi has not only been recognised for his role in Netflix’s Frankenstein (he’s nominated in for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role), but also for his earlier work on The Narrow Road to the Deep North. The Australian television series has earned Elordi recognition in the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television category.
5. Surprise: International films lead the charge
Again, not so much of a surprise if you’ve seen the films in question. But somewhat of a departure from tradition for a major awards show, yes. At the top of our list is Sentimental Value, for obvious reasons. But also worth mentioning is the Palme d’Or winner, It Was Just An Accident, which is nominated for Best Motion Picture: Drama, Best Motion Picture: Non-English Language, Best Director – Motion Picture, and Best Screenplay – Motion Picture.
