Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has admitted that adapting Mary Shelley’s horror classic Frankenstein was his “dream” project.
So, when Netflix offered the filmmaker an unprecedented deal to make that dream a reality, del Toro understandably put his all into the film.
So far, it seems to have paid off, with Netflix even funding a limited theatrical release for Frankenstein. Whilst it performed admirably on a limited number of screens, the real win came when Frankenstein debuted to Netflix.
The film garnered their highest numbers for a Netflix original movie, totalling 73 million streams within it’s first week… But what next?
Historically, Netflix don’t release their content to physical media, much to the annoyance of collectors all over the globe. So, it was assumed that del Toro’s Frankenstein would also not be available for purchase.
However, as we know, Guillermo del Toro plays by his own rules. So, fans were delighted when the filmmaker confirmed Frankenstein would release to physical media.
The director made the announcement via social media, as a means of quelling fans fears that they would only be able to enjoy Frankenstein for a limited time. Del Toro further elaborated that the physical release will be loaded with extra features, including a plethora of deleted scenes that were deemed “too gory for Netflix.”
Reliable sources report that del Toro will collaborate with The Criterion Collection to bring Frankenstein to disc. As is well known, Criterion have released several of del Toro’s previous films, including The Shape of Water.
A release window has not yet been disclosed for Frankenstein’s physical debut, but we’ll let you know as soon as that changes.
