Police investigating deadly crash in Newark, Delaware

NEWARK, Del. (WPVI) — The Delaware State Police is investigating a four-car fatal crash.

The crash happened around 9:45 a.m. Saturday on Salem Church Road in Newark, Delaware.

According to police, a Honda Civic, followed by an unknown vehicle, a Subaru Impreza and a Hyundai Elantra, were all traveling northbound.

At the same time, a Chevrolet Malibu was traveling southbound, but was in the northbound lane as it approached the oncoming vehicles.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the unknown vehicle entered the southbound lane in an attempt to pass the Honda Civic.

As the unknown vehicle and the Malibu approached each other, the Malibu swerved back into the southbound lane, but then overcorrected and swerved back into the northbound lane, crashing head-on into the Civic.

The Malibu continued southbound before crashing into the Impreza, and then the Elantra.

The driver of the Civic, a 60-year-old man from Middletown, Delaware, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The drivers of the Impreza and the Elantra did not report any injuries on scene.

The driver of the Malibu, a 21-year-old man from Dover, Delaware, was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The unknown vehicle did not crash, and drove away from the scene.

Delaware State Police continue to investigate.
