Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has invited Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for a breakfast meeting at his residence in Bengaluru on Tuesday amid speculation of a power tussle between both of them over the state’s top post.
This would be the second breakfast meeting between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar after the duo met on November 29 to project unity in a meeting pushed by the Congress high command.
During the first breakfast meeting held at Siddaramaiah’s residence, the Chief Minister insisted that “there were no differences” between him and Shivakumar now and there won’t be any in the future as well.
“Our agenda is the 2028 elections. Local body elections are important. We discussed them. We also discussed bringing back Congress in the 2028 elections. We discussed that we would go together. There are no differences between us and there will be no differences in the future,” Siddaramaiah said while addressing a press conference.
He also reiterated that he would follow Congress high command’s decision on the brewing issue.
The power-sharing debate resurfaced as Siddaramaiah crossed the halfway mark of his five-year term last month, triggering calls from Shivakumar’s loyalists who cite an alleged understanding within the party that the Chief Ministership would eventually shift to the Karnataka Congress President, which is Shivakumar at the moment.
Shivakumar’s supporters are insisting that the Deputy Chief Minister be elevated to the top post, citing promises made by the high command after Congress’s 2023 Assembly election victory.
However, Siddaramaiah has denied reaching any compromise and asserted that he would be the Chief Minister for a full five years.
Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who has been shuttling between Delhi and Bengaluru to curb the tensions, held a meeting with party MP Rahul Gandhi in the national capital on November 29. A final decision was expected within the next two days, sources earlier told India Today TV.
A group of legislators supporting Shivakumar recently travelled to Delhi to push for a mid-term leadership shift, while Siddaramaiah’s supporters firmly deny any such arrangement.
The Congress top brass is reportedly examining a combination of steps, including a cabinet reshuffle and organisational changes in the Karnataka Congress unit, to defuse tensions and stabilise the government.
