The School Education Department has decided to launch a teacher licensing system in 2026, making it mandatory for both government and private school teachers to obtain a professional teaching license.
According to officials, a summary for approval will soon be sent to the Provincial Cabinet. The new framework will also link the extension of contract teachers to the successful acquisition of a teaching license.
Under the proposed system, candidates will be required to pass a licensing test to qualify. Only those who clear the exam will receive the official teaching license. The Punjab Examination Commission (PEC/PECTA) will oversee the testing process.
The School Education Department stated that the licensing system aims to improve teaching quality, ensure professional standards, and enhance learning outcomes in classrooms across the province.
