SA’s luckiest suburbs revealed in St John Lottery rankings

If you’ve ever wondered whether your suburb is a lucky one, a new South Australian lottery analysis might just have the answer, with the state’s top 10 luckiest locations revealed.

St John Ambulance SA has crunched the numbers on its lottery winners since 2023, identifying the suburbs where prizes have been won most frequently, and some familiar Adelaide neighbourhoods have come out on top.

Mount Barker, West Lakes, Prospect and Morphett Vale are among the luckiest locations, with Hallett Cove, Seaton, Greenwith, Mawson Lakes, Happy Valley and Golden Grove also making the top 10.

For residents living in these areas, it might be an interesting talking point the next time a lottery ticket comes around!

And while the rankings are based on past wins rather than predicting future luck, they offer a fascinating snapshot of where St John Lottery prizes have been landing across South Australia.

One recent winner who knows the feeling all too well is Marcus, a carpenter from Fulham Gardens, which sits just outside the top 10 in 13th place.

After a particularly difficult year that included breaking his leg in a soccer incident, undergoing surgery and taking several months off work, Marcus received an unexpected phone call that turned his luck around.

He had won a Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 valued at $69,914 in an early prize draw in late October.

“I was at work as a carpenter when they called and I was lost for words, it was nice to get some good luck,” Marcus said.

For Marcus, purchasing a ticket was about more than the possibility of winning. His family had previously received support from St John Ambulance, and family members had also participated in its training courses.

“I never expect to win anything and if you win a small prize or something it’s a bonus. I live in the western suburbs and you don’t ever know the winners, it shows that everyday people like me, I’m just a carpenter on the tools, can win a nice car.”

This year’s St John Lottery has more than $6.5 million in prizes up for grabs, including a Grand Prize choice between a Semaphore South home package valued at approximately $5 million, a Gold Coast apartment package of a similar value, or $4.5 million in gold bullion.

There is also an exclusive Maserati Grecale Trofeo draw, valued at more than $214,000, for ticket purchasers who sign up for free St John Lottery membership, alongside 5,000 other prizes.

Beyond the excitement of the prizes, the lottery supports the work of St John Ambulance SA, a not-for-profit organisation that has been helping South Australians for more than 140 years.

Its services include first aid and health training, youth development programs, and medical support at community, sporting and major events, with more than 40,000 people trained annually.

St John Ambulance SA Chief Executive Associate Professor Steve Morris said the lottery played an important role in helping the organisation continue supporting local communities.

“For 140 years, St John has provided compassionate care to South Australians. Despite today’s economic challenges, our staff and volunteers continue to keep thousands of people safe and cared for while equipping communities to help others,” Associate Professor Morris said.

“The lottery gives South Australians the chance to win extraordinary prizes while supporting our work, so we can keep delivering the best possible services to the community well into the future.”
