English rugby bosses respond to Welsh interest in joining Premiership

“The Prem is an attractive league, and responsibility for its expansion sits with the Men’s Professional Rugby Board, which has established detailed entry criteria that any prospective club would need to satisfy.

“Resources are currently focused on supporting English clubs throughout the pyramid who aspire to join the league.”

Wales currently fields four professional sides, the Ospreys, Cardiff, Scarlets, and Dragons, in the 16-team United Rugby Championship, which also features clubs from Scotland, Ireland, Italy, and South Africa.

The WRU’s response was notably more guarded, leaving the door open for future engagement with the English game.
