NC chief Farooq Abdullah urges Muslim unity against demolitions in BJP-ruled states

National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday urged Muslims across the country to unite against the BJP over demolitions in states ruled by the party, alleging that the community was being targeted and marginalised.

Addressing a party workers’ convention in north Kashmir’s Baramulla, the three-time Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister questioned how Muslims could support a political dispensation under whose rule their homes, shops and places of worship were allegedly being demolished.

Abdullah expressed concern over demolition drives carried out in several BJP-ruled states, alleging that “properties belonging to Muslims were being disproportionately targeted”. He called for unity within the community, saying “collective action was necessary to safeguard its interests and constitutional rights”.

The NC leader also questioned those within the community and regional political circles who continued to support the BJP despite what he described as the marginalisation of Muslims.

Taking aim at the mainstream media, Abdullah accused several TV channels and media organisations of abandoning journalistic independence and functioning as “paid mouthpieces” of the ruling establishment.

He alleged that financial incentives and pressure from those in power had compromised editorial freedom, preventing the media from highlighting the hardships faced by marginalised communities.

Abdullah also raised concerns over the alleged harassment of journalists who report critically on the government, claiming that those who speak out are subjected to police summons and intimidation.

The BJP and governments in states ruled by the party have maintained that demolition drives are carried out by the relevant authorities against illegal encroachments and unauthorised constructions, irrespective of the religious identity of those involved.

Opposition parties and critics, however, have accused authorities of selectively targeting properties belonging to Muslims.

Abdullah has frequently criticised the BJP-led Centre over its policies in Jammu and Kashmir and on issues concerning minorities.
