4 Underrated African and Caribbean Cities to Visit in December 2026

You know how the December group chat goes. Someone sends the dates of the big festivals in Accra, someone checks flights, and within an hour the trip has a shape that nobody chose. It is a good shape, and plenty of people love it. But a trip that arrives fully assembled can only give you what it was assembled to give.

My argument is that the December trips worth your leave are the ones that ask something of you. A place stays underrated for a reason, and usually the reason is effort: a longer stay, a thinner flight, a rule to read. This guide covers underrated African and Caribbean cities to visit in December 2026, for African Americans planning travel to Africa and for Africans weighing a trip across the continent or the Atlantic. Nairobi, Cape Verde and Bridgetown each ask for a different kind of effort, and each repays it differently.

Is ‘Detty December’ still the best December trip for the diaspora?

Accra is the benchmark for good reason. Ghana’s 2025 tourism report, relayed by The Ghana Report in June 2026, counted 141,186 international arrivals in December 2025, up 11.35% on the year before, drawn by concerts, festivals and nightlife. The same report shows total receipts for 2025 slipping to $4.34 billion from $4.83 billion in 2024. It does not say the two are related, and I won’t claim they are. What the figures do show is that a bigger crowd and a better year are separate things, which is worth remembering when “everyone is going” is your main reason.

Nairobi in December 2026

Most itineraries treat Nairobi as a corridor between the airport and a safari. Travel Noire’s editors argued in August 2026 that this undersells a city with an innovation scene around iHub and the GoDown Arts Centre, and a fashion scene they place alongside Lagos and Dakar. I cannot judge their ranking from here, but I can see why an itinerary built around hours would miss it. What Nairobi asks for is time, and Kenya seems to want you to give it. Its government launched Journey Back to Eden on December 1, 2025, a program aimed at African Americans and Afro-Caribbean communities, and run in partnership with an African American-owned travel company and a Kenyan-owned safari operator, according to Tourism Update.

Do you need travel insurance to visit Kenya in 2026?

For most non-Kenyans, yes. People Daily reported on October 14, 2026, that, for arrivals from October 5, most non-Kenyans entering for under twelve months need designated travel health insurance from a locally licensed insurer, and a policy from your home insurer will not count. Kenyans, residents and citizens of East African Community states are exempt. Africans from outside the community who are exempt from the electronic travel authorization (eTA) still have to buy the cover.

Cape Verde in December 2026

Cape Verde has long been known best by its own diaspora. Summer 2026 widened the audience when the national team reached its first World Cup and went out in a 3-2 knockout loss to Argentina on July 3rd. For travelers in the United States, the bigger story is a flight. In April 2026, the national airline, Cabo Verde Airlines, announced it would resume the Praia to Providence, Rhode Island, route on May 4, strengthening “our connection to our diaspora in the U.S.” A second weekly flight that would include Sal was due to follow on June 5, said commercial director Eunice Barbosa.

That is a thin line to hang a December on, and the December timetable is the first thing to confirm. It also defines the effort Cape Verde asks for: commit to the flight first and plan the island around it. The reward is a Creole culture that belongs wholly to neither Africa nor Europe. Travel Noire points to morna, coladeira, funaná and batuque in the music, and cachupa, a slow-cooked stew of corn and beans, at the table, all under roughly 350 days of sunshine a year.

What do you need to enter Cape Verde?

The country’s tourism board asks visitors to register on its EASE platform, Cabo Verde’s pre-arrival registration system, at least five days before travel and pay a 3,400-escudo airport security tax, about 30 euros. Whether you also need a visa depends on your passport, so check the EASE list before you pay for a ticket.

Bridgetown, Barbados

Barbados complicates any list of underrated places. Javon Griffith, chair of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association, told Barbados Today, that over New Year’s week of 2025, occupancies were in the high 90s, with some hotels full. December is peak season, and that was last year’s picture, so plan for the same rhythm this year.

Bridgetown’s case rests on attention, because the headcount is already high. The island is sold as a beach, which leaves its capital in the background. They call the city “a living archive of Black history and resilience,” pointing to the 2011 UNESCO listing of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison, and to a lunch of flying fish and cou-cou, a cornmeal and okra dish, at Cheapside Market. The effort Bridgetown asks for is simple to describe and harder to do: book early, pay peak rates, and spend your days in the city rather than at the resort.

Is skipping ‘Detty December’ worth the friction?

The best argument against all this is friction. The season in Accra is popular because it is easy to understand, with the music, the reunion and the feeling of arriving among your own. Nairobi brings a new insurance rule, Cape Verde a single route, and Bridgetown peak rates. Why swap a proven reunion for a logistics project?

Because the reunion is on offer in these places too. Cabo Verde Airlines pitched its route as a link to a diaspora, and Kenya’s program is built to bring African Americans and Afro-Caribbeans home. I will concede that the Providence route was designed first for Cape Verdean Americans, so weigh it accordingly. Nothing here says skip Accra. A first-timer might reasonably start there, and a returning traveler might make Nairobi next December’s trip. The choice that deserves a second look is the default one.

How to choose your December 2026 trip

Pick one place and finish this sentence: “It will give me something that Accra in the last week of December won’t.” If you can, apply for the Kenya insurance, register on EASE, or book your Bridgetown room early, and go. If you can’t, book Accra and enjoy it. The diaspora has plenty of homes, and December is long enough to visit one you haven’t.

For Nairobi, apply for the eTA early if you need one, and expect to buy the designated health insurance unless you are a Kenyan, a resident or an East African Community citizen. For Cape Verde, confirm the December departure from Providence, register on EASE at least five days in advance, and budget about 30 euros for the airport security tax. For Bridgetown, confirm entry rules and fares with Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. before booking. All details are as of October 15, 2026.
