40 more SA schools to get 40km/h limits as cameras set to enforce changes

South Australian drivers are being urged to check their usual routes as 40 more schools prepare to receive time-based 40km/h speed limits by the end of 2026.

Of those schools, 24 are located across 21 sites that already have fixed speed or red-light cameras, which will be able to issue offences at the reduced limit once the new signs are installed and operating.

RAA has now created an interactive map showing all 159 existing and upcoming time-based school speed limit locations across the state, as well as where fixed cameras are currently positioned.

The limits apply between 8am and 9:30am and again from 2pm to 4pm on government school days, with flashing signs indicating when the 40km/h restriction is active.

Prominent locations set to receive the lower limit include Portrush Road outside Linden Park Primary School, Shepherds Hill Road near Blackwood High and Blackwood Primary schools, and Main North Road and Regency Road near Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College.

All three locations already have fixed cameras.

Other schools on the list include Glenelg Primary School, Hamilton Secondary College, Loreto College, Marryatville Primary School, Morialta Secondary College, Seaview High School, Westminster School and Woodville High School.

RAA Senior Manager Road Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain said, “RAA has built this new map to help drivers see where all of the time-based school speed limits apply, and to improve road safety for our most vulnerable road users.

“With 40 more schools getting the time-based limit in the coming months, now is a good time for drivers to check where they are and when they apply.

“These sites are on arterial roads that thousands of South Australians drive every day, so even if you think you know your route well, there may soon be a new time-based speed limit on it.”

There are already 119 schools across South Australia where the time-based 40km/h limit is in place, although only four of those currently have a fixed camera at the location.

The time-based limit is separate from 25km/h school zones on local roads.

Those 25km/h limits apply whenever children are present, including outside standard school hours and on non-school days.

Among the 40 schools set to receive the new limit are Ascot Park Primary School, Blackfriars Priory School, Calvary Lutheran Primary School, Glen Osmond Primary School, Mount Barker High School, St Agnes Primary School, Walkerville Primary School and Warradale Primary School.

RAA”s new interactive map allows drivers to check both existing and upcoming locations and identify where fixed cameras are already operating.

The changes come as students return for Term 4, with the remaining 40 school locations due to receive the time-based limits before the end of 2026.
