Premier League talking points as Man City beat Liverpool and £116m man toils again

Elsewhere, Oliver Glasner lost his own derby after Crystal Palace got the better of Nottingham Forest with a hard-fought and slightly fortuitous 3-1 victory.

Forest have been far from convincing so far, their only win coming at Villa Park. This weekend, they were downright wasteful. They have played seven games in all competitions and lost four.

But for Palace, after an encouraging display at Elland Road before the international break, three points will have been another huge boost for new boss Pierre Sage, who is still finding his feet in the capital.

Brighton also continued their unlikely early title surge, overcoming Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light, while Ipswich recorded their third win of the campaign at the expense of Fulham, meaning they are already just one victory from reaching the four they achieved in their dismal campaign two seasons ago.

Alvaro Arbeloa, however, appears to be the front-runner in this year’s sack race, with the Cottagers yet to record a league victory.

And then there were the champions.

Arsenal eventually got over the line against a tricky Leeds side, who held Mikel Arteta’s men well in the first half before taking the game to them after the break.

James Justin gave the Yorkshire side a thoroughly deserved lead, but Arsenal’s title-winning quality ultimately shone through. Bruno Guimaraes capped a terrific team move to secure all three points and return the Gunners to winning ways.
