Good morning! Kiké Hernandez hit a home run in the postseason last night, which is a thing that Kiké Hernandez likes to do. But this one was particularly notable, as it was his 17th career postseason homer, tying him with David Ortiz on the all-time list.
I don’t love that Kiké may knock Big Papi down a slot. But now that he has, I’m hoping he can pop off another couple of homers before the Dodgers run is over. And I’ll say the same about Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy, and even Giancarlo Stanton. Why? Because they are all exactly 2 homers behind Derek Jeter on the all-time list, with Kiké 3 behind.
I once got into an argument with a fan at Yankee Stadium who was adamant that Derek Jeter was the greatest postseason player in baseball history. But, in making his argument, this fan revealed that had no idea that Jeter had played in far more postseason games than any other player in history owing to the fact that, for most of baseball’s history, the World Series was the only playoff round there was (Yankee fans, they’re not always the best and brightest). The fact that the ever-expanding postseason has warped the record books to such an extent that it does in fact look like Jeter and Bernie Williams are the undisputed gods of the sport has always bothered me and I demand an end to it right this second!
So, aside from rooting for the Padres, I am now fully invested in one thing this October: seeing massive dongs from Kiké, Freddie, Max, and even Giancarlo (let’s face it: many Yankee fans would actually be pissed if he ends up passing Jeter).
Use this space to talk about postseason records and whatever else you want and, as always, be good to one another.
