Adelaide is heading into a week of sharp weather swings, with sunshine and warm spring conditions giving way to showers, gusty winds and the chance of thunderstorms before a much cooler start to next week.
Today is the calm before the change, with Adelaide set for a sunny top of 23 degrees under light to moderate easterly winds. Thursday also looks bright and warmer, climbing to 28 degrees after a cool 15-degree start, so it’s shaping up as the pick of the week for anyone planning time outdoors. That settled run won’t last, though. By Friday, cloud will build quickly across the city, with showers becoming very likely and a thunderstorm possible in the afternoon. Rainfall could total anywhere between 6 and 20mm, and winds are expected to turn from the north and northeast to the west and northwest as the change moves through. Temperatures will also drop back, with Friday reaching 23 degrees after an overnight low of 19.
The cooler air settles in on Saturday, bringing a mostly cloudy day and the chance of a morning shower, with Adelaide only reaching 19 degrees. Winds will stay westerly through much of the day before easing by evening. Sunday starts brighter, with a sunny morning and a top of 25 degrees, but the dry spell may be short-lived, with a medium chance of showers developing later in the day. Another unsettled burst arrives on Monday, when showers are again expected and there is also the chance of a thunderstorm.
Monday’s temperature will fall to 19 degrees, with winds shifting west to southwesterly during the morning. By Tuesday, Adelaide looks set for a distinctly cooler and wetter feel, with a high chance of showers, a top of just 14 degrees, and brisk southerly winds making it feel even chillier.
Across regional South Australia, the story is one of contrast over the next few days. The rest of Wednesday will stay dry statewide, though patchy early morning frost is possible in the southeast. Temperatures remain below average in many areas today, while the southwest trends warmer. On Thursday, the east is expected to stay dry, but conditions begin to turn in the far west during the afternoon as showers and thunderstorms develop and spread into central districts overnight. Some of those thunderstorms may be severe, with damaging wind gusts possible west of about Ceduna.
On Friday, that active weather band pushes east across much of the state, bringing showers and thunderstorms more broadly before clearing from western districts later. Severe thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts are possible about central parts. By Saturday, showers are expected to linger around the agricultural areas and nearby districts, mostly clearing during the afternoon, while isolated thunderstorms remain possible early across the north and northeast.
Rainfall totals are expected to stay under 2mm in the north, increasing to 2 to 10mm elsewhere, and 5 to 15mm across agricultural areas, with isolated falls of 15 to 25mm possible. Coastal conditions around Adelaide will also become choppier into Friday and Saturday, with winds strengthening and seas building to 1 to 1.5 metres on Saturday.
Happy Wednesday!
