Pep Guardiola’s ego speaks volumes as he gets involved in Man City scandal

Pep Guardiola could have stayed out of this mess. He really could.

Manchester City have just been found guilty of serious breaches of Premier League financial rules over a nine-season period. The club says it will appeal. That is their battle.

Guardiola is no longer their manager. He has walked away after a decade at the Etihad. He has nothing to gain from sticking his head above the parapet.

So what does he do? He dives straight back into the middle of the storm.

In a social media post, Guardiola declared: “I am here; more than ever,” insisting he would always stand behind his club, owner, chairman, Ferran Soriano, players, staff and supporters.

That is not the statement of a man quietly slipping into retirement. Instead, that is a man planting his flag.

For all his genius, this speaks volumes. Ego, it seems, is behind his public declaration.

Not necessarily vanity. Not simply arrogance. Something more complicated, the fierce, almost obsessive pride of a man who has spent his career believing in his football, his methods and the institutions around him.

Guardiola has always wanted to control the argument.

Remember his reaction when City were charged back in 2023? He insisted the club had effectively been condemned before the case was decided and repeatedly maintained that he trusted the people running City.

He could have said: “I am no longer involved. The club will deal with the legal process. Let’s wait for the findings.”

Instead, he has repeatedly chosen to engage.

And now, after an independent commission has found City guilty of the charges relating to serious financial breaches, he is still standing there with his chest out.

Sometimes the biggest reason people refuse to step away is not necessity. It is pride.

Guardiola does not have to defend City’s financial accounts. He did not run the legal case. He is not the man who has to answer for the commission’s findings.

Yet here he is. Right in the firing line.

And perhaps that is because this is about more than Manchester City.

It is about Guardiola’s legacy, his era, his trophies and the footballing empire he helped build.

If City’s achievements are questioned, inevitably some of the questions will drift towards the manager who delivered so much of them.

Maybe his outburst is all down to loyalty, after all he did spend 10 years at the Etihad, it is certainly a huge part of his life.

But watching Guardiola over the years, ego still seems to be his biggest superpower.
