Construction is underway on a major new $80 million health precinct in Adelaide’s east, set to significantly expand cancer treatment and day surgery capacity when it opens in 2028.
The Burnside Hospital Health Precinct is being built alongside the existing hospital on Kensington Road, with the new facility to introduce radiation treatment, increase chemotherapy services and add two operating theatres capable of accommodating around 3,500 additional procedures each year.
At the centre of the expansion will be a new linear accelerator, allowing radiation therapy for cancer patients to be delivered at the precinct, while Burnside Hospital’s existing chemotherapy treatment capacity will increase by 33 per cent.
The new operating theatres will complement the five already operating within the hospital and are aimed at meeting growing demand for day surgery.
Diagnostic imaging, pathology and fertility services will also be housed within the new precinct, alongside larger consulting rooms for several medical specialists relocating from the existing hospital grounds.
Burnside Hospital CEO Rebecca Badcock said the development was an important investment in the future of the not-for-profit hospital.

The development received planning approval in September 2025 after the Planning Minister referred it to the State Commission Assessment Panel for assessment due to the scale and significance of the project. At the time, the approved redevelopment was valued at $60 million.
The new building will sit immediately adjacent to Burnside Hospital and will be connected to the existing facility via a footbridge across Moore Street.
Three levels of underground parking will provide more than 150 spaces, while the expanded precinct will support around 250 jobs during construction and more than 70 ongoing roles once operational.
Health Minister Blair Boyer said the project would increase access to healthcare services for people living in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs.
“This represents a significant new piece of health infrastructure for South Australia that will meet the needs of patients in key areas of care, particularly in comprehensive cancer services and day surgery capacity.”
Health infrastructure specialist Cambridge Medical Property is designing and constructing the development.
The first patients are expected to be treated at the new Burnside Hospital Health Precinct in mid-to-late 2028.
