New details are emerging about the crash that killed Constable Mia Lay, with investigators examining whether unnecessary speed was a factor in the tragedy.
The 20-year-old officer died early on Friday morning in Sydney when the patrol car she was travelling in hit a tree on inner-city Gibbons St after she and her fellow constable were called to a stolen vehicle job in nearby Glebe.
Police are now closely examining the speed of the patrol car at the time of the crash. 7NEWS understands the Volkswagen Tiguan could have reached at least 150km/h in the approximately 100 metres it travelled from Redfern Police Station.

The 24-year-old male officer who was driving suffered minor facial injuries is now home from hospital but he is still yet to be formally questioned.
“Everybody involved in this, including the driver serving police officer, is going through hell right now, and I know that the police fraternity are thinking about him,” NSW Premier Chris Minns said.
When responding under lights and sirens, police are allowed to exceed the speed limit, but if that speed is deemed to be unnecessary, charges can be laid.

“That will all form part of the investigation, of course, and it’s important that we remember that police are best to do these investigations,” NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley said. “They do critical investigations all the time, and it will be thorough.”
Car diagnostics and CCTV will also be key to the investigation as officers piece together what led to the loss of one of their own.
