The temperatures may have chilled, but visitors are still making their way to Cape Cod for some unusual ice cream flavors.

At Mr. Bob’s Cape Cod in Sandwich, social media has helped turn unconventional soft serve combinations into a draw for visitors. Cape Cod Times recently spoke with a Worcester-area couple who said they learned about the shop on social media and stopped in for a Dirty Martini soft serve, which features olive oil, sea salt, lemon zest, and olives.

The shop also offers a caviar-topped soft serve, with a bump of Black River Caviar option, adding $30 to the order.

Co-owners Josh Cole and Dominga Ruiz de Jesus, who purchased the former Ice Cream Sandwich shop last year, told the publication they wanted to create a space where they would want to hang out. The menu includes snacks, beer, and cocktails, while the soft serve options include flavors like shaved strawberry and cinnamon and lime. Earlier this summer the shop highlighted an espresso martini flavor called the Bobslide.

“There’s something for everyone,” Cole told the publication.

And in Falmouth, a Connecticut man recently stopped in at Ben & Bill’s Chocolate Emporium to try its lobster ice cream, sharing a video of the experience on X.

“It’s definitely real lobster,” Chris Grosse said in the video. “It’s not terrible.”

Grosse said the $6 cup was kiddie-sized and that he would “not eat this whole thing.”

  • Are huge ice cream scoops a uniquely New England thing?

Ben & Bill’s has offered lobster ice cream for more than 30 years. The idea first came from a New York City couple who suggested to owner Bill Coggins that the shop should make something with lobster because it had “everything, but something with lobster.” The flavor is served at all of the Ben & Bill’s locations and is made with a butter ice cream base and chunks of lobster meat.

While Grosse praised the ice cream, he wasn’t sold on the lobster.

“The ice cream base is really good but the lobster in it is interesting and the aftertaste from it isn’t wonderful,” he said.

So, what’s the verdict?

One commenter asked Grosse to rate the lobster ice cream out of 10.

“5?” he responded.
