Third man charged in July 4 murder of Cambridge DPW worker

A third man has been arrested in the fatal Fourth of July shooting of a Cambridge Department of Public Works employee, officials said Tuesday. 

Moises Pimentel, 23, of Boston, is charged with murder, carrying a firearm without a license, evidence tampering, and conspiracy, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Cambridge Police Commissioner Pauline Wells said in a press release. 

At his arraignment Tuesday morning in Cambridge District Court, Pimentel pleaded not guilty and was held without bail, officials said. 

The charges stem from the killing of 32-year-old Xavier Bautista, who was shot around 4:30 a.m. on July 4 near Broadway and Norfolk Street. 

Authorities said an hour had passed before a pedestrian found his body and called 911. Bautista was found dead at the scene, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined he died from two gunshot wounds. 

Investigators discovered Bautista left his home wearing his navy-blue Cambridge DPW uniform around 4 a.m. Two men wearing masks allegedly confronted and shot Bautista, prosecutors said. 

The DA’s office identified those two men as Pimentel and Giovani Arroyo, 22, of Boston. 

Rayquon Brown, 29, of Canton, allegedly acted as a “lookout” and “potential backup” during the attack, prosecutors said. 

After shooting Bautista, the men fled in a white pickup truck, officials said. Two of the defendants allegedly discarded multiple items into dumpsters in an attempt to destroy evidence in the case. 

Prosecutors have not yet identified a known connection between the three men and Bautista, and the motive remains under investigation. 

Arroyo was charged Thursday with murder, conspiracy, and carrying a firearm without a license.

Brown was arrested about a week after the shooting. He also was charged with murder, carrying a firearm without a license, conspiracy, and being an armed career criminal. 

Both Arroyo and Brown have pleaded not guilty and were ordered held without bail during their arraignments, per court records. 

A probable cause hearing for Pimentel is scheduled for Oct. 22, records show.

An attorney for Pimentel did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday afternoon.
