A first-year postgraduate student at AIIMS-Jodhpur was found dead in a hospital washroom on Tuesday, with police suspecting suicide. The deceased was identified as Dr Raj Nilesh Yadav, 31, a resident doctor in the Department of Anaesthesia.
Police said Yadav had been on duty in the operation theatre and was later found unconscious inside the washroom during a break. He was taken to the emergency department, where he was declared dead.
“He was on duty in the OT Tuesday. During break at about 1 pm, he came to his restroom but did not re-emerge to resume his duty,” Basni Station House Officer Nitin Dave said.
According to police, his colleagues began looking for him and called his phone. They heard it ringing inside the bathroom. When there was no response, the bathroom door was broken open and Yadav was found lying on the floor in an unconscious state.
The SHO said some syringes were found beside him in the washroom, and it is suspected that he injected himself with a lethal drug. “We informed his family members and are awaiting the post-mortem report,” he said.
Police said no suicide note had been recovered from the spot so far. Yadav’s mobile phone has been taken into possession, and the device and other evidence are being examined with the help of a forensic team.
Officials said the scene is also being examined in detail to establish the sequence of events, while police are looking into all possible aspects of the case before taking further legal action based on the investigation findings.
The case is being investigated as police await the post-mortem report and continue examining the forensic evidence, the mobile phone and the circumstances leading up to Yadav’s death.
