Celtics center Mitchell Robinson missed his scheduled introductory press conference on Tuesday afternoon to attend to a personal matter.
According to video posted to his Snapchat account, Robinson said his brother was hit by a car around 6 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
Robinson asked his followers to pray for his brother during the video.
“He told me to make a video,” Robinson said. “Because he was in the comments and he, I guess, reads what people said. I was like ‘bro, don’t worry about them’. They’ll be alright. They don’t have to know.”
“He was like ‘no man’, I feel bad because of X, Y, and Z, so this is for him. Can y’all go text him and offer some words of encouragement and some prayers … If y’all could do that I would truly appreciate it.”
Robinson said his brother has been through a lot in the past year, mentioning that the brother was also involved in a separate car accident a few months ago, not long before the Knicks won the Finals.
“You can’t really make this [expletive] up, the kid has been through so much,” Robinson said. “I feel bad for him. He’s just had a lot going on this whole year. I hope he has a better 27th [year] because 26 was not it for him.”
“Ya’ll know me. I’m very big with family. When one of my siblings goes down or something happens to them – I don’t know if it’s the big brother in me or the parent in me – whatever it is, it just freaks me out.”
The Celtics introduced Paul George and Mike Conley at the Auerbach Center on Tuesday. Coach Joe Mazzulla and president of basketball operations Brad Stevens also spoke at the press conference.
“We’re obviously excited to welcome Paul and Mike,” Stevens said during his opening statement. “And Mitch, who is not here, unfortunately he had to leave [Tuesday morning]. He’s been here the last few days. [He had to] attend to a personal matter, but it is an exciting day.”
The Celtics signed Robinson to a three-year, $47.4 million contract during the offseason. He averaged 5.7 points and 8.8 rebounds last season, helping the Knicks win their first championship since 1973.

Mazzulla said he is looking forward to seeing how Robinson’s experience winning with the Knicks can be used to help the Celtics this season.
“We have Mitch who is coming off of a win, so we have to take that wisdom and experience,” Mazzulla said. “He was around great coaches and great players. And then, Mike alluded to it, Mike and Paul have a different perspective of not getting there yet and that desperation. We need to be able to leverage that as a team and that’s where they can lead and help us.”
Robinson’s 8.8 rebounds per game last season were good for 13th in the league. He (19.6) and Andre Drummond (19.6) were the only player in the top 15 to average fewer than 20 minutes per game last season.
Neemias Queta, who is expected to split time with Robinson in the Celtics’ frontcourt this season, told reporters on Saturday that he’s “extremely happy” that he won’t have to match up against Robinson anymore because of his rebounding ability, adding that he believes Robinson will be a great addition to the team.
The Celtics are set to begin training camp at the Auerbach Center on September 29th. The preseason opener is scheduled for October 8th at 7 p.m. in Cleveland.
