The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested three people, including a senior secretariat assistant of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), while allegedly exchanging a bribe of Rs 15 lakh.
The arrests followed the registration of a corruption case against an MCD inspector and others over alleged illegal payments linked to the installation and display of advertisements.
According to CBI officials, the case was registered on September 16 following allegations that officials were facilitating the continued installation of billboards, hoardings and LED displays even after the expiry of the applicable tender period.
The accused were also allegedly permitting advertisers to put up displays beyond the numbers sanctioned by the civic authorities in return for substantial illegal gratification.
Following the registration of the case, the agency formed a trap team and carried out an operation in New Delhi.
During the operation, the MCD senior secretariat assistant, posted in the Advertisement Department of the South and Najafgarh zones, was arrested along with two private individuals allegedly associated with Naks Creators Pvt Ltd.
The three were apprehended while allegedly transacting the Rs 15 lakh bribe, the agency said.
The CBI has not disclosed further details about the specific roles allegedly played by each accused or the official against whom the initial allegations were made.
Searches were subsequently conducted at multiple locations as part of the investigation.
During these searches, the agency recovered cash amounting to Rs 25.25 lakh, according to the CBI. Further searches were continuing at the time of the agency’s statement.
The CBI said its investigation into the alleged bribery network and the circumstances surrounding the payments is underway.
The agency is expected to examine financial records and other material recovered during the searches, besides establishing the involvement, if any, of additional officials or private persons. Further details are likely to emerge as the investigation progresses.
