Thieves allegedly broke into a jewellery shop in Mathura district’s Kosi Kalan town and stole 10.5 kg of gold jewellery worth crores of rupees and Rs 15 lakh in cash, police said on Monday. The theft took place at Amit Jewellers in the Sarrafa Bazaar area on Sunday night and came to light when the owner opened the shop on Monday morning.
The incident sparked protests by traders, who shut shops in the market and alleged laxity in police patrolling. Senior police officials visited the spot and assured the traders that those behind the theft would be arrested soon.
According to police, the thieves broke open a gate on the roof to enter the shop. They allegedly opened the safe and cupboards and took away the jewellery and cash. They also removed the digital video recorder connected to the shop’s CCTV cameras. When the owner reached the shop on Monday morning, he found the roof gate broken, the safe and cupboards open, and the valuables missing.
Traders said a police picket was located barely 100 metres from the shop. Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar said a forensic field unit had collected evidence from the scene and nearby areas, and footage from CCTV cameras installed at neighbouring establishments and along roads in the market was being examined to trace the movement of the thieves. He said a case had been registered and four separate teams had been formed to crack the case.
Kumar said that, based on the information given by the shop owner and the way the safe and cupboards were allegedly opened using keys, police suspect the involvement of a former or current employee familiar with the shop and its locks.
He added that the records of present and former employees would also be examined as part of the investigation. The case centres on a major theft at a jewellery shop, the traders’ protest, and the police effort to identify and arrest those involved.
