Premier League star escapes unhurt after £60,000 car flips outside training ground

A Premier League footballer has escaped without injury after his £60,000 Land Rover Defender overturned near his club’s training base.

Hull City winger Sorba Thomas was involved in the frightening road accident close to the Tigers’ Cottingham headquarters on Friday.

Concern grew over the Wales international’s welfare after photographs of the overturned vehicle, which displayed a personalised registration plate, began circulating across social media.

Witnesses reportedly described seeing the Defender sliding along its roof following the collision on a residential road.

Images taken in the aftermath showed the badly damaged vehicle upside down in the street as stunned local residents, some wearing dressing gowns, gathered nearby.

Despite the alarming appearance of the scene, Hull moved quickly to reassure supporters that Thomas had climbed out of the vehicle without suffering any physical injuries.

A club statement said: “Hull City is relieved to confirm that Sorba Thomas is unharmed following a road traffic accident near to the club’s Cottingham training ground.

“The club is aware of images of Sorba’s car circulating on social media and can reassure supporters that he has sustained no injuries and emerged from his vehicle completely unscathed.”

No further information has been released about the precise circumstances surrounding the incident.

Although Thomas was physically unharmed, manager Sergej Jakirovic must now decide whether the 27-year-old is in the right condition to travel with his team-mates for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea.

Hull are due to visit Stamford Bridge as they attempt to protect both their unbeaten start and perfect defensive record.

The Tigers are yet to concede a goal this season but will face a major test against a Chelsea side who have made an explosive start in attack.

Thomas only completed his move from Stoke City on deadline day, earning an opportunity to establish himself in the Premier League after taking an unconventional route to the top flight.

The former West Ham academy player was released by the London club as a youngster and rebuilt his career in non-league football with Boreham Wood.

His performances eventually persuaded Huddersfield Town to offer him an opportunity in the English Football League.

Thomas went on to enjoy loan spells with Blackburn Rovers and French side Nantes before joining Stoke permanently in 2025.

An impressive Championship campaign subsequently brought him to the attention of Hull, who moved to secure his services during the closing stages of the summer transfer window.

The winger, who has earned 27 senior caps for Wales, made his Premier League debut during last weekend’s goalless draw against Aston Villa.

He was introduced from the bench as Hull collected another point and maintained their encouraging start following promotion.

Thomas will now hope the frightening accident does not prevent him from being involved at Stamford Bridge.
