Australia is competing in one of the world’s most unusual sporting events, where ancient traditions meet modern competition in the heart of Central Asia.
The sixth iteration of the Nomad Games is currently unfolding in Kyrgyzstan, featuring 4000 competitors representing 90 nations in sports inspired by medieval Mongol culture.

Athletes donning traditional dress compete in events like archery — performed both on foot and atop horses — before baying crowds.
One of the most eye-catching events is Kok-Boru, where teams of riders use a goat’s carcass to score goals in a brutal form of mounted polo.
Other competitions include horse wrestling, where shirtless competitors circle their opponents on horseback, golden eagle racing, bone breaking and yurt raising.
Some competitors have stood out more than others, including an Iranian giant who made light work of his brawny opponents, wowing crowds with his dominance.
Spectators can swap popcorn for local fare like Umach — a traditional dumpling-like delicacy — while taking in the spectacular events.
Australia’s green and gold team were yet to medal heading into Sunday’s final day, but there was still time for an upset from the underdogs before the closing ceremony.
