Four boys from a same family in Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri family died within 10 days after several relatives fell ill following a visit to a waterfall. Three of the deceased were brothers, while the fourth was reportedly the son of a relative.
The family members had gone to a waterfall on August 16 to bathe. After they returned, several members of the family began falling ill. However, the health department has not yet attributed the deaths to the waterfall water.
The family of Tanveer Ahmed had gone to the waterfall along with relatives. Around 16 people from the family and their relatives had reportedly gone there to bathe. After they returned, an illness suddenly spread among the family, and the condition of four children deteriorated one after another.
According to the family members, the children suffered from fever, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. Despite treatment, all four children died.
The condition of the 14-year-old deteriorated first, and he died despite treatment. Subsequently, 19-year-old Ayaz and other children in the family also fell ill. The four deaths, one after another, left the family in mourning.
The deaths of four children from the same family within a short period alerted the health department and district administration. A health department team reached the family and collected samples from the family members as well as people living nearby. Officials are also examining the treatment received by the deceased children and the reasons behind their illness.
Additional District Magistrate Dinesh Chand Shukla said samples had been collected from around 62 people who had gone to the waterfall. He said a medical team was investigating the deaths, which occurred after the children developed fever. He also said the family had been provided financial assistance.
Officials have also collected samples of the waterfall water. Shukla said that during the sampling process, officials learnt that three girls were also unwell. They were subsequently sent to Gwalior for treatment.
The exact cause of the illness and the deaths will be known after the sample and investigation reports are received.
